The Route
JOGLE means John O’Groats Land’s End. The most north-easterly and most south-westerly points on the mainland. There are no two points you get to without getting wet (must stop mentioning the getting wet) that are further apart. Its around 875 miles from one to the other, not too much of a hardship you might think, but We gotta get there and back too! I’m estimating close on 2000 miles all in. (3210 kilometers for those under 16).
I’m reckoning on covering around 300 miles a day. That’s 2 tankfuls at normal usage, six hours in the saddle. I’m hoping to actually see some the countryside on the way, not just a blur of armco barrier between petrol stations. It’s not a race. This will give us a chance to do a bit of sight-seeing, blogging, photographing and talking on the way.

Google Maps are great. Great for working out miles, hours and alternative routes. Although we have sat-nav in the car, we’re going ‘paper-based’ for this jaunt. I’ve had to buy new maps. The dusty ones I dragged out from under the stairs still have canals as planned developments. It’s the first time I’ve picked up a map in years so I’ll leave navigating to the pillions. They’d only get bored.
Microsoft maps have better aerial shots though, you can get closer in. Ideal for seeing if the B&B you are booked into is surrounded by scrapyards or parkland. Too near the scrapyards and I might wake up without a bike!
