The Bike

It’s a 1987 Honda Goldwing GL1200 Aspencade. Yes, twenty (count ‘em) years old. I bought it just over two years ago from a guy on my forum. One look and I knew I had to have it. The Honda Goldwing is a bike built in America by Honda to cover great open highways of the Navada Desert, rather than a quick blast to Morrisons to pick up a bottle of milk, just because you can.

I spend longer getting my kit on and off than I spend riding the beast, that is, up until now. Let me take you through some of the features of a modern (as in c1987) motorcycle such as mine. I say that almost mockingly, but there are features on this bike you just don’t find on machines these days. Maybe there is a good reason - maybe I’ll find out soon enough which ones are there to pad out the brochure.

  • Radio & cigarette lighter. Won’t be using either of these.
  • Air suspension that I can pump up and deflate at will. Still not sure if this works properly. Looks good on the LCD dash though.
  • Clock. Simple enough device. It tells the time, but this is the first bike I’ve had where it’s not velcro’d on.
  • Big, deep, wide seat. But does it turn to nails after two hours?
  • Storage. Plenty of it. Two panniers (the side ones) a large box. At least it looks large, until you start to put stuff in there. I think packing is going to be the toughest bit. What to take what to leave out.
  • Vanity mirror. Fluff for sure.

    The Beast

    The only thing I have bought specifically for the bike is an Autocom Rider/Pillion intercom system. These are the Dogs Danglers in intercom systems and I can plug in my phone, mp3 player, sky dish (just kidding) and everything in there.
