There are 2 main routes through this part of the world. The A38, fast dual carriageway most of the way and the A30, another main trunk route. There were some evil roadworks on the A38 on the way down so we decided not to do the Atlantic way, but get some miles done on the A30.
The A30 was closed today. No explanation, all traffic was to use the A38. This made the A38 a car park. We had been in the traffic for about 20 minutes, moving about 40 cars length every 10 minutes or so. Sloooow progress. I was reluctant to filter due to the width of the bike, ignorant drivers and the double white lines almost everywhere on this stretch of the road.
A driver in the opposite carriageway stopped and said it had taken him an hour to get this far in 7 miles. With a constant four on the temp gauge, clutch feeling the effects and the prospect of an hour like this, I contemplated some hardcore filtering. I saw a bike approaching in the mirror doing exactly this. It was one of the guys from JOG & LE again. We exchanged greetings and good luck and he was off. Five minutes later, so was I as the previously unseen fifth bar on the temp gauge appeared. We were off.
Cars newer than our Wing, broken down, littered the roadside adding to the chaos and we filtered. The windscreen on the bike was filthy after about 1500 miles so I was sitting upright, looking over it, much like PC McGarry from Trumpton as we picked our way through the traffic. After forever, we made our way, unscathed through the other side, and stopped at the Route 38 Diner near Saltash for a well earned drink. Air conditioning never felt so good.
I can imagine that escaping from Prison is easier and quicker than escaping from Devon & Cornwall. We were still miles from Exeter and the M5 and it was around 2:30pm.
